Both sides resolute on tough weekend road trips

FLINT, Mich. — Over the weekend, the Flint City Bucks and women’s side Flint City AFC each secured key points in difficult fixtures away from Kettering University’s iconic Atwood Stadium.

Flint City is now one of just three organizations fielding undefeated sides in both USL League Two and USL W League, with a dozen Great Lakes division matches already in the books.

Flint City Bucks 1 @ Oakland County FC 0

The Bucks (4-0-0) stretched their perfect start on a tense Saturday night in Royal Oak.

After over 70 minutes of stalemate, towering center back Hugo Bacharach got on the end of a Flint City free kick for a golden opportunity that was deflected wide. On the ensuing corner kick, leading scorer Josemir Gomez headed in his fifth goal of the season to finally break the deadlock.

With his perfect delivery to the back post, midfielder Brennan Creek earned the assist.

Bucks’ attacker Michael Adedokun appeared to score the breakthrough goal late in the first half after fighting off three defenders in the penalty area, but a foul was called in the buildup.

Oakland County FC had entered the evening as the only other undefeated side in the division with one victory and two draws. They were held scoreless for the second time in four matches.

Flint City remains in first place, a full 3 points clear of second-place AFC Ann Arbor.

Flint City AFC 4 @ Kalamazoo FC 4

It was yet another impressive result for the women of Flint City AFC (5-0-3) on Sunday, playing on the road just two days after a scorching home victory over Midwest United FC. Host Kalamazoo FC entered the match in second place but needing points to stoke their division title hopes.

Kalamazoo pressed high early and capitalized with a goal in the very first minute. But despite tired legs, Flint City took it as a wakeup call and quickly adjusted to the pace of the match.

At the 16-minute mark, Kacey Lawrence drew a penalty kick and converted herself to tie the game. Less than a minute later, an incisive four-pass buildup was finished by Sammi Woods.

Kalamazoo then clawed back to level the game at 2-2 in the 27th minute.

Before the first half ended, Flint City connected another one-two punch. Jenna Blackburn blasted one home unassisted before Woods deftly finished on a breakaway to make it 4-2.

In the 55th minute, Abi Hugh put the game back within reach for the hosts — rocketing a stunning goal over goalkeeper Kadance Radwanski from outside the penalty area to the far post.

Things appeared settled at 4-3, especially after a Kalamazoo coach was sent off verbal abuse of the referee crew. But in the fourth minute of stoppage time, the hosts drew level again at 4-all.

Flint City AFC remains in first place, still 5 points ahead of second-place Kalamazoo.
